Novarad unveils radiology’s augmented reality with Microsoft’s HoloLens

SALT LAKE CITY—Medical imaging company Novarad has utilized the cutting-edge technology of Microsoft’s Augmented Reality goggles platform, the HoloLens, to develop a new-age imaging product that renders patient imaging studies into 3D and presents them in an interactive manner as seen accurately overlaid directly onto the patient’s body.

The HoloLens’ augmented reality shows exact anatomical alignment and orientation, can remove the guesswork and questions out of pre-op planning, and allows clinicians to see exactly where the problem is on the patient. This technology enhances medical and scholarly research, and is an excellent teaching tool for medical professors and students one day targeting live surgical or biopsy use.

“We are using cutting-edge augmented reality to display a 3D version of a patient’s anatomy on the actual patient,” said Steve Cvetko, Director of Research and Development at Novarad. “It offers a true, life-size rendering with exact alignment and orientation, which is not just valuable for education and research, but could be incredibly useful to say, a surgeon. If a surgeon can see the medical image overlaid on the patient’s body, it could eliminate medical misunderstandings.”

This step forward in imaging technology brings studies out of the dark room and into operating rooms, pre-op planning, and into doctor’s offices. At this time, the Novarad application of HoloLens technology is not cleared by the FDA for diagnostic use.

Those interested in learning more about the HoloLens augmented reality technology in regards to medical imaging may visit Novarad at RSNA, booth 7329, visit or follow the company on Twitter, @NovaradCorp. Novarad will be offering live demonstrations of the technology for all who wish to view it. RSNA takes place in Chicago, Ill. Nov. 27 through Dec. 2.
