Just Throw It Up to the Cloud (Storage)

Cloud storage has been around since the turn of the century, although many consumers still think the cloud was created by Apple (Cloud computing is believed to have been invented by Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider in the 1960s).

Cloud storage solutions are readily available to everyone, with most of us now saving our photos, music, emails, text messages, etc. on a cloud storage solution.

So, why are many in the medical field hesitant to use cloud solutions for storing their medical documents and records?

Why Not the Cloud?

Fear of PHI exposure has left the medical field behind in respect to cloud storage solutions.

According to a HIMSS survey, 58 percent stated security was their #1 reason for not adopting a cloud storage solution. Additionally, a Spiceworks survey reveals that only 45 percent of Healthcare IT professionals are using a cloud solution, with 20 percent intending to introduce cloud storage solutions in the next 12 months.

Healthcare Security Breaches

Though it can seem scary to put your trust in something intangible, there are many security benefits to cloud storage solutions.

Average on-premises attacks per year are 61.4, while cloud customers experience an average of only 27.8. In fact, most healthcare data breaches come from lost or stolen devices!

Since 2010 it has been the cause of 68 percent of healthcare data breaches. This means most breaches are coming more from human error than technology error.

How to Ensure Your Cloud Security

Healthcare professionals and IT professionals alike need to know they can have all the benefits of the cloud without risking their security.

Choosing the right cloud solution is essential. Not all cloud services are created equal. It is for this reason that you must do your homework, and verify their security measures are sufficient.

They should have multiple layers of security measures in the following areas:

  1. Physical

  2. Server

  3. Network

  4. Application

  5. Data

  6. Devices

  7. Users

Last but not least they must be willing to enter into a Business Associate Agreement (BAA)!
